The story of Canadian Club Whisky began with Hiram Walker, who made his fortune as a grocer and grain merchant in Detroit in the mid 1800s. By 1856 he had enough capital to invest and a desire to go into milling and distilling. However, the unstable Temperance laws in the United States at the time – a precursor to Prohibition – encouraged him to look across the Detroit River to Canada as a suitable place to set up his business.
