Nebbiolo
Pronunciation: Neb-ee-olo.
Sangiovese may be the grape that dominates in Italy, but it's Nebbiolo that produces some of the country's most sought - after and highly priced wines, most notably Barolo in Piedmont. It has wonderfully plummy, spicy fruit flavours with notes of tar as it ages - and it takes a long time to age, needing anywhere between three and five years in the classic versions before it begins to soften up.
