Alvarinho

Pronunciation: Al-va-reen-yo.

In brief:The Portuguese version of Albariño, grown in mainly in the north of the country. Has a very similar flavour profile. though it's often a little more tart and higher in alcohol. Is used most widely in production of that great Portuguese white table wine Vinho Verde, which is most often compared - rather unfairly, I think - to drinking car battery acid. It's got a lot better in recent years, though.

I'll start by correcting the ethnocentric notion that ALvarinho wine from Portugal is a version of Alvariño: actually it's all the way around, furthermore a true Alvarinho needs to stage in Alvarinho Oak barrels to completely deserve it's name, which is something that only happens in Portugal. Thanks though for correcting that bad connotation of Vinho Verde that normaly as it's reason on the fact that, unfortunately, the most exported brands are really low quality.
