This stole the show at the Wines of Spain Awards. It's from Cillar de Silos, a family owned producer that's up there with the very best from Ribera del Duero, Vega Sicilia included. Silos make this, their flagship wine, from the fruit of some of the oldest vines in the region. Many are well over a century old, and produce grapes of immense concentration and richness. They're grown at high altitude, where temperatures fluctuate between day and night, adding elegance and complexity. Aged for 16 months in new French oak barrels, this pure Tempranillo has layers of silky dark fruit, mocha and nutmeg. Decant for an hour to let the flavours fully unfurl, serve in large glasses and enjoy with rare saddle of lamb or traditional Spanish hams.
