26 years ago, a batch of dark roasted malted barley fell into the hands of The Balvenie’s mashman Brian Webster and maltman Robbie Gormley. It’s a grain more commonly used in stout, but it brought about this intense and mysterious A Day of Dark Barley single malt whisky. The Scotch is of course big on malty notes, but it’s sweetened up with hints of toffee and spices, and there are citrusy elements to balance out the oaky undertones. What a balance.
