About Ken Forrester The Gypsy

Expert Reviews

Reviewed by Neal Martin, Wine Advocate
Product reviewed: Ken Forrester Gypsy Stellenbosch

From 50-year old Grenache and 30-year old Syrah vines matured for 24 months in barrel, the marvellous 2007 The Gypsy has a rustic, natural, earthy bouquet with touches of mulberry and white pepper. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. It is still a little tight considering its age, but very focused and utterly fresh and elegant. Drink now-2020. 93 out of 100.

93/100 Rich but perfumy, with silky raspberry ganache and red cherry flavors laced with alluring spice, incense and black tea notes. The long finish lets additional red currant and mineral notes chime in. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre.

Score: 93/100

The Chenin Blanc master here shows his mastery of reds with a wonderfully rich, savoury and soft example, blended from Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvèdre and dubbed ‘Gypsy’ thanks to its perceived ‘bohemian character’. Enjoy it as I did with rare charcoal-grilled rib of beef and green salad.

Product: The Gypsy 2012

Award: IWSC 2016 - Silver Outstanding

Tasting notes:
"Black, berry fruits on the nose with sweet following. Some earthy notes. Smooth entry and flow where more earthy notes show while sweet spice emerges. Dry, tannic grip gives a firmness which well supported by fine oak. Some liquorice notes show with lots more black fruit. Well balanced and long finish."
