Clos Mogador is one of the original five Clos of Priorat. Rene Barbier and a small group of peers saw incredible potential in this forgotten amphitheatre of slate based soils in Catalunya, and in the 1990s, showed the world what it is capable of. This is a place that produces massively concentrated red wines. The Sierra de Montsant isolates the area from most rainfall forcing the vines to dive deep into the faults of the cool and rocky llicorella soils that sparkle with quartzite flecks. The result from this unusual situation is a very small, but concentrated yield for the winemakers to work with.Mostly Garnacha with Carinena, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon, the Clos Mogador is pure power. Its deep purple color coats the glass as you breathe in lush ripe blackberry and blueberry with layer upon layer of coffee, chocolate, pomegranate molasses, toasted oak, vanilla, clove, and sweet herb. Its full and intense on the palate but with persistent yet rounded tannins that go on forever. Drink this with a pan-seared porterhouse and intense cheeses like stilton or roquefort.
