Federico Paternina, one of Rioja’s historic wineries, was founded in 1896 in this cellar in Ollauri, near Haro. It was recently renamed ‘Conde de los Andes’ after Paternina’s prestigious Gran Reserva. Originally excavated in the 16th century, the cellar is 40m underground. There in four caves, each 150m long, the winery ages its Reservas and Gran Reservas. The winery keeps a small stock of bottles from most of the vintages since its founding that are occasionally tasted with wine writers.
