Chateau Latour Wines

Château Latour is one of the most important producers in the whole of Pauillac with a long history. The oldest document mentioning Latour dates from 1331!

Whilst wine was always made here, it was not the sole focus in its early history. It was when Alexande de Segur became owner in the late 1700s that things began to turn towards wine. He even acquired Chateau Lafite in 1716. The family tradition continued with his son, dubbed "Prince of the Vines" by Louis XV, who acquired more plots from Mouton and Calon, other famous Chateau. As relative European peace descended in the early 1700s, British aristocracy's taste for Bordeaux wine helped the region flourish and some of the best names today began to emerge as standouts already. By 1767, a barrel of Latour was worth 20 times more than a typical Bordeaux!

The Segur family's descendants endured through the French revolution and World Wars up until 1962 meaning that the estate managed to stay largely in tact. The family shares were eventually sold as their ownership fragmented over time and is now owned by Francois Pinault since 1993.

The current property director is Helen Genin, who is very well known in the Bordeaux scene. She has been steering the property towards biodynamic practices which they find has brought a more delicate, floral note into the aromatic complexity. You can learn more about sustainable winemaking in Bordeaux at the link. Chateau Latour has always been bit of a trailblazer which has kept it remaining as one of the great Bordeaux wine producers. Recently, it became one of the first First Growth Chateau to disengage from En Primeur, Bordeaux's traditional wine sale, with the aim being that they could preserve and guarantee the quality throughout the entire process.
