Chateau Latour Wines

Château Latour is one of the most important producers in the whole of Pomerol with incredible history. The oldest document mentioning Latour dates from 1331, authorizing Gaucelme de Castillon to build a fortified tower in the parish of Saint Maubert. This tower reappears in Jean Froissart's Chronicles in 1378 during the Hundred Years War, used as a fortress to guard the estuary, manned by Breton soldiers for the King of France.

Whilst wine was always made here, it was not the sole focus in its early history. It was when Alexande de Segur became owner in the late 1700s that things began to turn towards wine. He even acquired Chateau Lafite in 1716. The family tradition continued with his son being dubbed "Prince of the Vines" by Louis XV who acquired more plots from Mouton and Calon, other famous Chateau. As relative peace descended in the early 1700s, British aristocracy's taste for Bordeaux wine helped the region flourish and some of the best names today began to emerge as standouts already. By 1767, a barrel of Latour was worth 20 times more than a typical Bordeaux!
