What is a Dubbel?
A Dubbel (double) is a Trappist Belgian Ale, most similar to a brown ale. They first originated in Westmalle Abbey in 1856, and then the recipe was changed in the 1920s to create what is now the Dubbel.
They generally have subtle bitterness, a weighty body and fruity (dates, prunes), caramel, nutty flavours. They come in a reddish, dark brown colour.
Other styles include a Tripel, and Quadrupel, which go up in strength.
