What is a Double Dry Hopped IPA?

This is a style of IPA (India Pale Ale) that is given a double helping of hops in the post-fermentation process, creating an even hoppier version of the already renowned hoppy beer.

For a normal IPA, hops are added during the boil to extract bitterness, retaining their piney, citrus, grassy notes. And to get the accolade of double or triple even, you simply do just that with the amount of hops. Dry hopping is where things get more brew technical.

In the dry hopping process, hops are added, usually in pellet form after the boil. This means that the volatile acids in the hops are not extracted which makes the beer less bitter, but with all the aromatic goodness. Overall flavour of course depends on the hop varieties, but it is worth knowing that this style has exploded in popularity in the craft beer scene and we certainly agree that there is something uniquely good about them too.
