Tokaji

Pronunciation: Tock-eye

For centuries, Tokaji was one of the world’s most famous wines, enjoyed in royal courts across Europe. However, the march of the red tide, Communism, under the Soviets put an end to this reputation where the focus shifted from quality to quantity. Fortunately, this reputation has come back up rather quickly and it is once again, for many, the pinnacle of dessert wine

Tokaji is made from 6 grape varieties, the most key being Furmint, Hárslevelu and Sárga Muskotály (better known as Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains).

Once upon a time Alsace used to produce their own wine similar to this, under the name of Tokay d'Alsace, but, thanks to a bit of good old inter-regional rivalry with the likes of Hungary (which cultivates the dessert wine, Tokaji), it was renamed Tokay-Pinot Gris and since Hungary joined the EU, altogether banned.
