Rueda Wines
In contrast to its neighbours Toro and Ribera del Duero, Rueda mainly produces white wines. In the 60s and before, Spain was known for its oxidative style of white wines which was popular in Rueda. However, in the 1970s, the Marqués de Riscal winery in Rioja decided that Verdejo could help Spanish whites keep up to date with the fresh, fruity white wines that are still the preferred style today. Surprise surprise, this style of winemaking is now what the region is famous for.
The key grape variety is of course Verdejo producing wines with apple, pear and peach flavours, sometimes with a herbal backbone. Sauvignon Blanc is also growing in popularity from here.
