Rias Baixas Wines

Rias Baixas is the largest wine region in Galicia which has undergone huge expansion in the last few decades, largely thanks to the popularity of Albarino. Now, there are around 180 wineries, ranging from small to very large producers, with the famous Bodegas Martín Códax as the largest producer. The wines from here are generaly good quality and currently quite a fashionable style (fresh and fruity). Plus, they have the added bonus of being affordable which has led to them quickly becoming popular.

Over 95% of production is Albarino which is well suited to the high rainfall and damp climate. Often it is made as a single varietal, but blends with other local varieties are becoming increasingly more popular. These include Loureira, Treixadura and Caiño Blanco. Some red is made from the variety Souson.
