Penedes Wine

Penedès covers a diverse area of land stretching from the Mediterranean coast to the inland mountains and makes a range of wine styles, including the famous Cava. It was one of the first regions in Spain to modernise its wine styles thanks largely to Miguel Torres behind the famous Torres Vina Sol.

Xarel-lo, Macabeo and Parellada are the most planted grape varieties used for Cava, other sparkling wine and for still whites. International grapes including Chardonnay and Merlot also have noticeable plantings. The area is split into three zones: Penedès Marítim (near the sea), Penedès Central and Penedès Superior (near the mountains) which all have their speciality wines due to climactic differences.
