About Puligny-Montrachet Wines

One of the most revered white Burgundy producing communes and one of the tiniest, covering a distance of less than 3km from north to south. It is home to some of the most complex and elegant white wines of the Cote d’Or, and boasts 4 grand crus, and 17 premier cru sites. It is also home to the king of white Burgundy, the iconic ‘Le Montrachet’.

Puligny-Montrachet has a unique soil type, which makes it deeper, more minerally, and steelier than Meursault to the north and Chassagne-Montrachet to the south. The wines are generally higher in acidity, and are extremely stylish, deep, and long- lived, combining the natural rich, butteriness of the chardonnay grape, with a citrus, fresh acidity and minerality.

As with many of the top Burgundy villages, some producers trade on the name, and unfortunately, there are a number of disappointing Puligny-Montrachet wines on the market, as producers seek volume over quality. But at their peak the wines are sublime examples of restrained, elegant, complexity, and supreme examples of what the Chardonnay grape is capable of in its home environment.

Le Montrachet is arguably the most exclusive and expensive white wine in the world, and is produced from a 19 acre plot of land, which has an astronomical value. Lying on the south and east facing slopes of the hill of Mont Rachez, and surrounded by the other Grand Cru vineyards, including Batard Montrachet and Chevalier Montrachet. Le Montrachet has a unique position and mesoclimate, benefitting from the maximum sunshine and sun’s rays, due to its south east facing aspect, and also from the stony, limestone soil, and its relatively elevated position on the hill. These factors combine to produce the unique, and frequently sublime wine that is Le Montrachet.

Wine52 Case Review: Vin de France
Wine52s latest case embarks on a wine journey aiming to show you the world of wine away from boundaries and stodgy tradition. This case showcases Vin de France, an arguably simple wine category without geographical indication or clear provenance. This would once have been something to avoid in the wine world, and indeed many drinkers still associate Vin de France with cheap and cheerful. But in recent years VdF has undergone a remarkable transformation. As experimentation trends in the wine…

Champagne Tour: Bollinger and Hautvillers - Part 5
Part 5 returns after the holiday rush, making now an ideal time to revisit my Champagne trip from last May. If you’re planning a summer getaway, I recommend this trip — check out my earlier blogs to get an idea of various other houses I visited as well as some general tips on Reims and Epernay. Continuing the tour, this was to be our very first day where we only visited one Champagne house (terrible I know), before having a bit more free time to explore the region around Epernay. However, it was…

Champagne Tour: Boizel & Moet et Chandon - Part 4
Welcome to part 4, which is a little overdue. We now take the tour from the mighty city of Reims to the smaller commune of Epernay, the principal trading post for Champagne in the region and home to many of the oldest, most prestigious houses. The drive between the two iconic Champagne locations is a joy in itself. Straight through the middle of the national park, I think there was only a 10-minute stretch in a wooded area that you couldn’t see sweeping vineyards and various other recognisable…
