Itata Valley Wines

Located in Chile's Southern Region, Itata is among one of the coolest and wettest of its wine regions. It is in fact one of Chile's oldest wine-producing regions, although for the majority of that time it produced cheap grapes for blending into high volume production wines. Now with more ambitious winemakers exploring the potential of the Southern Region, and also seeking to combat the issues that climate change are causing in more northerly regions, Itata is seeing much greater quality in its wines.

Newer vineyards are being planted with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot which suit a more commerical perspective. However, the region also boasts a number of plantings of old bush vines from Pais and Muscat of Alexandria which make some very unique, quality wines. There is also some old vine Cinsault that has recently come to attention too.
