Maury Wines
Located in the north of Roussillon, Maury is special for it's vins doux naturels wines made from a minimum of 75% Grenache Noir. VDNs are made like Port, whereby spirit is added before fermentation is finished creating a sweet, fortified wine. Some fortified white wine is also made here, usually in an unaged style, although it is hard to find outside France. Similarly, dry, unfortified wines are also be made here, labelled as Maury Sec.
There are 5 major VDN categories to be aware of:
- Grenat/Rimage - these are the unaged wines.
- Tuile/Traditionnel - these are the red wines that are matured oxidatively adding nutty notes.
- Ambre - these are the white wines that undergo oxidative ageing.
- Hors d'age - oxidative ageing for an extended period.
- Rancio - used to describe more volatile aromas and flavours like varnish and strong coffee.
