This appellation lies between the Rhône and eastern Languedoc and is in effect the south-west limit of the Rhône wine region. Half of the production is red wine, about 40 per cent is rosé and a tiny amount of whites. The principal varieties,as is fairly typical for the Rhone are Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah. Recent decades have seen a movement towards smaller, privately-owned estates.
