The Martell Cognac house was founded by Jean Martell in 1715. He was only 21 and had moved to the Cognac region from Jersey. Over the coming years, he immersed himself in the arts of distillation, blending and ageing in oak barrels, and insisted upon monitoring and controlling every step of the cognac-making process himself. In 1721, as his fledgling young brand was first being embraced by the country’s most discerning connoisseurs, Jean Martell proudly declared that, “Our eaux-de-vie are the finest in the kingdom.” With its distinctive, arch-shaped bottle, Martell XO is a powerful symbol of inspiration, testimony to Jean Martell’s visionary spirit.
