What is Metaxa?

Metaxa is THE Original Greek spirit, often compared to Brandy but with a distinct difference. It is a blend of sweet muscat wines from the Aegean with fine aged wine distillates and Mediterranean herbs and botanicals.

The muscats are left in outdoor tanks, exposed to the sun, to bring them maturity and aromatic intensity with ripe, dried fruit and nutty flavours. The distillate is aged in French Limousin oak casks between a year to a decade adding cinnamon, nutmeg, pepper and vanilla notes - the number of stars on the bottle reflects the minimum age of the youngest spirit in the blend. Finally, the secret recipe of herbs and botanicals is added giving a final touch to the product.

Metaxa was created in 1888 by Spyros Metaxa, who was inspired by his journey's around the world to create a beverage for his own tavern. The "Salamina Warrior", the Metaxa emblem, is inspired by an ancient medallion that Spyros Metaxa found when building his distillery in Piraeus.
