Fresh, sweetly fruity and smooth-bodied, Caol Ila 12 year old single malt Scotch whisky is the colour of pale straw, with a delicate balance of tastes. The clean, appetising nose shows subtle citrus fruit with just a puff of smoke. Firm and smooth, it begins sweetly then yields a fragrant smokiness and a sweet-smoky, lingering finish.

This is without a shadow of a doubt my favourite whisky. Although I’m from the Highlands originally and this is an Islay malt, it always reminds me of home. Rich smoky, peaty flavours give a lovely warning embrace on the palate without being overpowering and it resolves to leave a lasting smooth but somehow almost spiced aftertaste. It’s often referred to as an “entry level” Islay malt because it doesn’t reach up and smack you with a brick of peat, like some others of the region do, but for me this is perfectly balanced and is always a pleasure to drink. A timeless classic and makes some of the “trendier” (aka pricier) whiskies pale in comparison.
