Non-alcoholic wine is made the same way as wine, even undergoing the usual alcoholic fermentation. However, after this process the alcohol is then removed through one of three main methods: vacuum distillation, reverse osmosis, or spinning cone columns. There are a range of options on the market, including some premium ones such as French Bloom.

Top Alcohol Free Wines

Alcohol free wines, sometimes referred to as dealcoholised wines, seems to have burst onto the scene in full force in recent years. But, it is still a new category in the wine world, with technology ever improving the quality and possiblities of the alcohol free wines out there. There are a number of options on the market now, but we are still waiting on a good oaky alcohol free chardonnay for example. So, we have pieced together a little guide of the current best in our opinion, covering both still and sparkling wines.

Popular Low Alcohol Wines

  • Nozeco ABV: 0.5%

Probably the most popular alcohol free fizz there is. Affordable, dry and refreshing with a notable grapey tasting profile - it is pretty close to the real thing.

  • Thomson & Scott Noughty Chardonnay ABV: 0%

A 100% Chardonnay, as in great Blanc de Blancs, just without the alcohol. Fresh, crisp and full of green apple - it has a more authentically wine feel than most.

  • Wild Idol Alcohol Free Sparkling Rosé ABV: 0%

A premium alcohol free fizz where they've used grapes from genuine wine quality vineyards to show that it doesn't all have to be done cheaply with less desirable grapes. Red fruits abound with a lovely floral finish.

  • Elton John Zero Blanc de Blancs ABV: 0%

As a teetotal man, Elton John has been on the hunt for some good alcohol free fizz and he has made it. Another 100% Chardonnay, this is crisp and lively with apple and honeysuckle notes.

  • Leitz Eins Zwei Zero Alcohol Free Riesling ABV: 0%

A clean alcohol free wine taking advantage of Riesling's natural intensity. Expect lemon and lime with red apples and a mineral streak. It's dry too.

  • Torres Natureo Alcohol Free Muscat ABV: 0%

From the legends behind Vina Sol, the Torres Natureo has a smooth, luscious, palate with golden apples and quince jam flavours.

  • Mcguigan Zero Alcohol Free Rose ABV: 0%

A great alcohol free rose indeed that tastes like the real thing. Enjoy vibrant floral aromas combined with fresh strawberries and citrus fruits with a crisp finish.

  • Mcguigan Zero Alcohol Free Shiraz ABV: 0%

Mcguigan have a whole range of alcohol free, and this is easily one of the best reds out there. It really shows off Shiraz varietal notes, with sweet blackcurrants, subtle spice, vanilla notes and a balanced finish.

Alcohol Free: Better Late than never
This title is very much a self-confession of over-indulging but making a conscious effort to combat that, finally. When you’re in the wine business, it’s rather difficult to cut down on drinking as you feel you have to try as much as possible to keep up to date and your taste buds sharp. However, as we all know, the alcohol-free industry has been making great strides towards creating drinks that give the right sense, mood and tone that come with having an 18+ drink just without the 18+ element…

The best recommended low and no alcohol wines
By Master of Wine, Christopher Burr 11/08/2023 There comes a time for all of us, when we just don't want any more alcohol. It could be as simple as being the designated driver, or the need to be clear headed the following day. In fact I generally shy away from drinking high strength drinks...perhaps one cocktail occasionally! But since I started enjoying and appreciating wine, fifty years ago, in my early 20's, when the average strength was 11% alcohol by volume, 12.5% in a really warm vintage…

The Enjoyment of Lower Alcohol Wines
By Master of Wine, Christopher Burr 15/01/2021 With lockdown it is tempting and enjoyable to open a few more bottles than normal. But I have found that this increased frequency of consumption is so much better if the alcohol levels are not up there at 14-15% which is increasingly the norm. Put it down to global warming, but more likely winemakers ability to grow much riper grapes. If you prefer lower levels of alcohol, which frankly I do, there has been a lot of de-alcoholised wines appearing…
