About Margaret River Wines

Undoubtedly the area with the highest concentration of fine wine producers in the whole of Australia. Situated south of Perth, on the very edge of the Indian Ocean, but close to where it meets the colder Southern Ocean, the area was only discovered in the 1960s as a region of massive potential in terms of quality wine production, with immediate comparisons to Bordeaux, both for its climate, but also topography and soil conditions. The area is most famous for its cool, crisp Semillon/Sauvignon blends, with lively Chardonnays, some Chenin blanc, and in terms of reds, cool, minty Cabernet Sauvignon dominates, supported by merlot and some structured Shiraz.

The areas south of Margaret River have recently also been identified as high potential quality regions, largely on the back of the success of Margaret River, and there is a proliferation of vineyards and wineries now set up, in only the last 10 years or so. Pemberton, Frankland River and Mount Barker, are the areas to watch.
