Salta Wines

Salta is Argentina's premier northern wine province which has attracted investment over the past few years from Argentinian and foreign winemakers alike as its capability for high altitude winemaking is excellent.

The vineyards are some of the world's closest to the equator, meaning sunlight is extreme, and they are also amongst the world's highest reaching up to 3000m above sea level, which brings cooling influence to offset the sun exposure. As a result, the grapes develop high tannin and other compounds through sunlight exposure, but retain excellent acidity thanks to the cooling altitude. The strong Zonda wind also forces vines to protect themselves from losing precious moisture, resulting in even thicker skinned grapes and lower yields. Conditions are extreme. The wines are full-bodied and concentrated, but extremely fresh and fragrant.

Malbec is the key black grape, being full-bodied but with distinct floral, herbal complexity. Bonarda, Syrah and Tannat also do very well. Torrontes is the key white grape making highly aromatic, delicious floral wines. In particular, Torrontes is most revered from the sub-region of Cafayate.
