What is Ouzo?

Ouzo is a dry, anise-flavored type of Eau de vie, that is, a brandy made from anything other than grapes. Strictly speaking though, it is its own category of spirit that is consumed as both an aperitif and digestif.

Typically, it is clear with high ABV, around 40-45% ABV, made by distilling rectified spirits with aniseed and other spices. Aniseed is the flavour it is really known for and many will recognise it as their after dinner shot at a Greek taverna. It is also a popular drink at Greek weddings and Saint's Day celebrations.

Ouzo is believed to date back to the 14th century when monks at Monte Atos started making tsipouro, a type of pomace brandy. This was then flavoured with anise and so became the recipe for Ouzo. The real rise in popularity came in the early 20th century when absinthe found itself subject to international bans and it could fill the gap, and now it is a firm tourist favourite as well as a well consumed spirit in Greek culture.
