Mosel Wines

Mosel is the undisputed home of Riesling, making some of the most famous, complex and impressive in the world. Its northerly latitude means that vineyard location is extremely important so that the grapes can ripen properly. Fortunately, Mosel is built for this. Its dramatically steep landscape, where many of the vineyards are too steep for machinery, provides the vines with plenty of sunlight, whilst dark slate soils absorb heat and release it during the night to promote ripening. The region is divided into 3 sections: Upper, Middle and Lower Mosel. The most famous estates and vineyards, and also the best wines, come from the Middle Mosel, with villages such as Bernkastel and Piesport to look out for.

These cool conditions mean that Mosel Riesling is some of the lightest bodied and highest in acidity you can find. The wines have extremely aromatic and floral aromas in youth, but have renowned ageing potential which sees their wines evolve into petrol flavoured, nutty wines. Mosel also produces some excellent sweet wines across all levels of German sweetness from Kabinett to Eiswein.
