Alsace Wine

The Germans liked it so much they invaded more than twice. And it's perfectly possible that the wines of Alsace were part of the reason - alongside the various centuries' worth of historical dispute over whom it actually belonged to.

About Alsace

It's no surprise, then, that a lot of the grape varieties grown in Alsace and the wines made are German in style and grape origins. The majority of wines produced are white, although there are some very fine reds produced in tiny amounts, often from Pinot Noir. But it's Riesling and Gewürztraminer that dominate on the white front, along with some Pinot Blanc. The wines produced are very aromatic (in other words smelly, but in a nice way) and also have a spiciness to them and a lot of zing from their relatively high acidity. This makes them great wines for food, especially spicy, Asian food such as Thai, Indian or, in the case of Gewürztraminer, Chinese.

Major white grape varieties: Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Gewürztraminer.

Key areas to watch: What you need to be looking out for is not so much areas but rather Grands Cms, a term that's given to only the best vineyard sites. The wines from these aren't cheap, but they're usually very good.

Names to look out for: Leon Beyer, Josmeyer, Keuntz-Bas,A Mann, Roily Gassmann, Schlumberger, Trimbach, the Turckheim Co-op, Zind-Humbrecht.

Wine52 Case Review: Vin de France
Wine52s latest case embarks on a wine journey aiming to show you the world of wine away from boundaries and stodgy tradition. This case showcases Vin de France, an arguably simple wine category without geographical indication or clear provenance. This would once have been something to avoid in the wine world, and indeed many drinkers still associate Vin de France with cheap and cheerful. But in recent years VdF has undergone a remarkable transformation. As experimentation trends in the wine…

Champagne Tour: Bollinger and Hautvillers - Part 5
Part 5 returns after the holiday rush, making now an ideal time to revisit my Champagne trip from last May. If you’re planning a summer getaway, I recommend this trip — check out my earlier blogs to get an idea of various other houses I visited as well as some general tips on Reims and Epernay. Continuing the tour, this was to be our very first day where we only visited one Champagne house (terrible I know), before having a bit more free time to explore the region around Epernay. However, it was…
