The meal box was delivered promptly and was clearly labelled. The contents were well packed and looked a quality product just from the way it was carefully packed. Plenty of packaging to ensure the food containers were undamaged in transit. Each container was well labelled and the cooking instructions were simple to follow. Made it effortless to prepare and cook yet made me feel involved. Including a nicely written menu was a classy touch. The food itself was of a very good quality and I didn't need to add anything. Portion sizes were good, a very grilling meal. All three courses were tasty and filling. The overall experience was enjoying a quality meal. The price was also reasonable. Definitely something I would do again.

Absolutely fabulous, fresh, colourful, all British, well seasoned, well balanced 3 course meal for two. Brilliant and easy to do. The scallops were melt in the mouth and the lobster thermidor divine with all elements working together to please the palate. Nothing over shadowed the main ingredients. The chocolate dessert was decadent and delicious, smooth and a perfect end to the meal.

A lovely one-off experience but after it's worn off you quickly realise you could do it yourself much more cheaply

Very impressed with the overall packaging of the mill kit. All the ingredients were lovely and fresh, and there was plenty of them as well. The ingredients served two very comfortably. Instructions were nice and easy to follow in terms of preparation, and although we didn’t use them, there was some videos on YouTube to help with the preparation and the cooking. I would definitely order this box again.

I ordered 4 meal kits to arrive every Saturday over March. Three were all mostly seafood based and one had a chicken mains. There were three courses each time for two people. The seafood was very fresh, far fresher than I can buy locally and the instructions to cook were very clear and simple to follow, plus very quick. Some of the courses made me cook things I’d never tried to cook before, such a live mussels but it was failsafe. There was good communication from both Rick Stein and the courier, DPD and nothing got damaged in transit. It was good value for money equating to £25 a head. This was far cheaper than what you’d pay at the restaurant and on the one delivery, even included a bottle of wine because a tiny amount was included in the cooking instructions. The chicken dish contained so much chicken that I put some aside and made a dinner up the following day from it. I loved all the starter dishes, indeed the last box I received was supposed to be another dish with mussels but plainly there weren’t enough mussels in the catch, so a different starter involving scallops was substituted. I was very happy with this because little beats really fresh scallops. The mains included different fish each week: hake, sea bass, and a variety of fish for a curry. The one week it was chicken with a beautiful sauce. The dessert courses were lovely but my least favourite of all the courses because I don’t have a very sweet tooth. My husband does and thought they were fantastic. His favourite was sticky toffee pudding and mine was the chocolate torte. Our least favourite was the white chocolate mousse. The Eton Mess came with double the amount of meringue required so I could have made a second dessert for another day had I wanted. I loved all the seafood courses but the scallops were my favourite. The chicken dish was gorgeous and the wine that came that week was a lovely choice. My least favourite dish was the white chocolate mousse. I chose to cook each course as we were ready to eat them because fish doesn’t like over-cooking. I was so pleased with the value, service and the meals that I went back on the Rick Stein website to order another 4 weekends but the selection was the same so I didn’t. Had they had a different selection of menus, I would have done so.

Disappointed with lobster from Stein's. Will not use their at home service again. Have used their restaurants in Padstow, which were all very good.

I ordered the lobster menu box from Rick Stein online as a treat. I was a bit apprehensive as I only started cooking for the first time on 1st Nov 2020 when I took delivery of my first weekly Gousto box. (Married for 39 years but my wife has always done all of the cooking.) The menu was very appealing and the photographs of the meals looked enticing, but it was the short instructional video showing me what I would have to do, that convinced me that it was easy enough for me to manage. At £100 for a 3 course meal for 2 it was considerably more expensive than my usual weekly £34-£38 layout for 4 x Gousto meals for 2, albeit that’s for main courses only. And you have to cook them yourself! From scratch. With actual ingredients. (I appreciate that Rick Stein and Gousto are completely different propositions and are not really comparable products.) There was initially a bit of a cock up with delivery when Rick Stein couldn’t supply lobster and said they would be sending Dover sole instead. I phoned up customer service and declined, saying I would rather wait and have lobster on a different date when it became available. They phoned back 15 mins later and said they’d managed to find a spare lobster and I would get my delivery as planned. The box duly arrived courtesy of DPD, which is great because you get a one delivery window, you can track it, and you can leave alternative delivery instructions. (DPD and Yodel are excellent. Royal Mail and Amazon delivery are ok. But Hermes are rubbish. I will not buy from anyone online who uses Hermes for delivery. That’s how bad they are! But for meal delivery it would need to be DPD or Yodel IMHO). Sadly despite the conversation with customer service, (and a confirmation email that lobster was on its way) what I received was Dover sole! I was bitterly disappointed and really angry. I vowed never to use Rick Stein again. Once I’d calmed down I phoned them to express my displeasure and to ask for a £50 refund. They agreed it was unacceptable and gave me a full refund. AND set up an order for a lobster box delivery one month later. So now I’ve had two Rick Stein 3-course meals...for FREE! That certainly quashed my anger and completely turned me around. But to be honest, was a bit over the top...I would have been satisfied with a fulsome apology and a generous refund. But to end up with two complete meals for free was unnecessary and doesn’t seem commercially viable! That said, both meals, the Dover sole and the eventual lobster, were fantastic and fully lived up to my expectations. Definitely a treat I will repeat - certainly during lockdown, and probably during ‘normal times’ as a cheeky supplement to eating out occasionally, rather than as an alternative. They weren’t cheap but the quality justified the price and they represented pretty good value. Would obviously have paid a lot more if we’d been eating it in one of his restaurants in Padstow! My only criticism is that the instructions were not as crystal clear as the Gousto ones (bearing in mind I’m a complete novice, following the instructions slavishly, rather than a more experienced cook) and their suggested timings were just plain wrong. I had to increase the time for grilling the scallops and I had to practically double the time for their pre-prepared potatoes, which were still hard and cold based on their suggested timings! This is really, really, really important - because if I can’t easily replicate at home, the end result I would expect in a restaurant then it undermines the whole concept. (Fortunately the timings for the fish and the lobster were fine, so that saved the day on both occasions.) Would I do it again? Absolutely. And I’m buying one to be delivered to friends for a birthday. Would I try other at-home restaurant meals? Yes, I would. Don’t forget to offer drinks pairing info, and offer those for sale at sensible prices too. Good luck.

We wanted to celebrate our wedding anniversary & had seen Rick Stein's hake box reviewed on Saturday Kitchen, which we watch every week. The smoked mackerel pate starter was delicious, as was the hake main course. Followed up with a very tasty sticky toffee pudding- served of course with proper Cornish clotted cream ! All very tasty.

Detailed instructions and was a great birthday present. We had friends who got a box too and we video called and had a cook off. So much fun. If you didn’t like an ingredient you could emit it and use something else. Really great packaging and quality
