LW Xmas in a box

Master of Wine Christopher Burr explored the selection and is here to tell you just how to enjoy these wines during your own Festive Celebration.

The Aperitif

Il Papavero Prosecco Brut

For any celebratory occasion a glass of fizz is always required and Il Papavero Prosecco Brut makes the ideal “aperitivo”. Dry fresh and light with a lemony nose and a crisp fresh almond mid palate. A nice fresh mousse and very typical. Apart from making an excellent start to a meal with cheese straws or nuts, it can also be drunk as a refreshingly dry counterpoint to a very sweet desert, or instead of a still white wine with fish or cold meats and salads.

The Starters

NEW Blanc Neuf La Bastide

Next up, is Blanc Neuf La Bastide. Blanc Neuf goes to prove that southern France is home to some of the wine world’s greatest bargains. Despite its unflashy origins, a previous vintage was named ‘World’s Best White Blend’ under £11 by the Decanter World Wine Awards. An exotic white.

NEW Rapaura Springs Reserve Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc

Wine No. 3 is the stunning Rapaura Springs Reserve Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Awarded New Zealand Winery of the Year 2015, the World’s Best Sauvignon Trophy, and 95 points for its last vintages, this Kiwi Sauvignon is a sensation. Bob Campbell MW wrote "it practically defines Marlborough Sauvignon." Punchy fresh and tropical.

Queen Bee Viognier

Wine No. 4 is Queen Bee Viognier from South Africa. This is a rich aromatic dry white, with lots of tropical fruit and a nice crisp finish. Interestingly the flavours developed and improved substantially the second day of opening, this young wine needs to “breath”. A wine to be drunk with smoked fish (salmon) and cold cuts. Ideal if you're planning finger food and canapes.

The Main Course

Le Prince de Courthezon Cotes Du Rhone

Moving onto mains, wine no. 5 is Le Prince de Courthezon 2019 Cotes du Rhone. Typical, dark wild berry fruit, with spicy black olive savoury character. Well made by one of the Rhone’s top co-operatives, this wine is a perfect match for roast Turkey or other roasts.

NEW Opi Malbec Reserve

Wine No. 6 is Opi Malbec Reserve. This gorgeous red blazed a name for itself on the world stage when its debut vintage was awarded ‘Best Malbec of Argentina’. That is some feat in a country that’s renowned for the quality of its Malbec wines. Velvet smooth with ripe black fruit.

Black Stump Reserve Shiraz

Wine No. 7 is the well know customer favourite, Black Stump Reserve Shiraz from Australia. This big, juicy Shiraz has masses of dark sweet fruit with a spicy black pepper finish and a bite of pleasant fresh acidity. Great with roasted red meats and stews. A real winter warmer that will keep you reaching for a top up.

To Finish

Andreson Fine Ruby Port

Finally, to round of this Christmas Case - wine no. 8 is the Andreson Fine Ruby Port. A good class Ruby, perfect after a big meal or just a small glass during the Christmas holiday. It is very nicely made with a lovely balance of fruit, acidity and alcohol. Very good with stilton or blue cheeses, sweets and chocolates, or just on its own! The perfect wind down tipple after a long day.
