Ontario Wines

Ontario is the largest wine-producing region for Canadian Wine, with the majority of vineyards around two of the Great Lakes (Erie and Ontario), which are important for moderating temperatures during the freezing winters preventing the vines from dying.

Ontario accounts for around 90% of Canada's Icewine production, but also produces reds, whites and a little rose, with Riesling and Chardonnay proving the best results for whites, and Cabernet Franc and Merlot for reds.

There are three primary appellations in Ontario:

• Niagara Peninsula
• Lake Erie North Shore
• Prince Edward County
