Mendoza

Mendoza produces over two thirds of the total production in Argentina, and is a large area, nestled in the shadow of the mighty Mont Aconcagua, one of the Andean peaks. It is situated in the shadow of the Andes, just over the border from Chile.

About Mendoza

At the turn of the 21st century, the acreage of Mendoza’s vineyards, was more than the entirety of Australia and New Zealand combined, which helps give some indication of scale; and also provides insight into the relatively low exports and sales to this market ( compared to Australasia), yet very high consumption on the domestic market.

It’s a high altitude region, with many mountain vineyards, and protected by these mountains, it has a drier than average climate, which permits the grapes to mature to full ripeness, and ensures far more vintage consistency than many wine regions. It also allows winemakers to experiment more easily with different and experimental grape varieties.

There are a number of sub regions within Mendoza, with very high quality wines now in production, especially in the high altitude areas, such as Lujan de Cujo, which was the first area to receive its own appellation in 1993. The other notable areas are Maipu, Uco and Tupungato.

Trivento – The success of Argentinian Winemaking
Trivento is a wine you have probably heard of, after all, it’s the UK’s leading Argentinian wine brand on the market. And that is saying something since Malbec from Argentina is huge at the moment and has been for some time. The wine comes from the famous Mendoza region which lies at the base of the Andes range in the valley of the river Mendoza. Vineyards here can exceed 1,500 metres! The center of Mendoza is known as the ‘Primera Zona’ as it has the longest history of quality wine in…

About Argentinian Wine
Argentina is a country of great excitement and interest, as far as wine is concerned. With an almost perfect climate and location, and a fascinating breadth of grape varieties producing great quality wine, it’s a wonderful country for wine production, but has not yet fallen on its feet in the UK market. Despite all efforts, and some high profile PR activity, Argentine wine sales still only account for 1% of the market, considerably behind New Zealand, and one eighth of the Chilean wine market…
