What is Black Spiced Rum? What makes it different from other Rums?

Black Spiced Rum is a dark coloured rum infused with spices and other flavourings. As a result, it has a rich, bold flavour profile with vanilla, caramel and spices at the fore. The colour is often darkend, either through aging in charred oak, or the addition of molasses or caramel colouring. Popular brands include The Kraken and Captain Morgan's Black Spiced.

It differs from Dark Rum through the production process. Whilst Dark Rum's colour comes exclusively from ageing in charred barrels over time, Black Spiced Rum is deliberately made darker through additional spices, molasses and caramel colouring. Spiced Rum, while also infused with spices, is lighter in colour and generally has a sweeter profile, making "Black" the important distinction for which spices are used and colouring.
