Wine52 Case Review: South Australia

Wine52s latest case explores the vast region that is South Australia, the country’s largest wine producing state that accounts for 50% of total fruit in Australia.

South Australia is home to a diversity of climate types and wines, from light, fresh white wines such as Clare Valley Riesling and Adelaide Hills Sauvignon Blanc to some of Australia’s most concentrated, full-bodied reds from the Barossa Valley. This case does a great job of exploring this diversity in wine styles, providing you with a modern outlook on South Australia’s approach to winemaking.

The Wine Tasting

Bustling Shiraz Rosé

Wine52 have recently begun expanding their cases with rosé to mark the increasingly hot summers we are getting. This is really quite a good one, and distinctly Aussie.

A 100% Shiraz rosé, this is more flavoursome and darker than you are perhaps used to. The misnomer that pale rosé is a sign of quality will disappear once you try this. On the nose you’ll find notes of strawberry, cranberry and raspberry with a slight floral undertone. It’s punchy and fruity from first sniff.

On the palate, this fruit weight and intensity is carried forward in the form of ripe and juicy red berries. It’s a lot more interesting than pale, timid rosé wines!

Far Out Sauvignon Blanc

Hailing from the Limestone Coast, this is a cooler climate expression of Sauvignon that does a really good job of balancing flavour and complexity. The nose starts elegant and soft, with passionfruit, grassy notes and melon. This then grows as more tropical fruits come out and add to the mix.

The palate is vibrant and fruity, but retains that cool climate herbaceous edge. You’ll find passionfruit, grapefruit, melon and lemon rind in the fruit clusters. A really good wine that’ll please almost everyone.

Vantage Shiraz

And, of course we have to have a Shiraz from South Australia. It’s got all the hallmarks of Aussie Shiraz and is therefore going to be perfect for your weekend BBQ.

The nose has a lot of depth, with chocolate, mocha, dark chocolate cherries and a hint of warming spice. After a little bit more inspection, these soften to sweeter red fruit notes.

To taste, it has soft and smooth tannins that make it very easy drinking despite the flavour intensity. Ripe red and black fruits abound, underpinned by an earthy undertone. The finish is long and has a delicious peppery tail.

The Verdict

Wine52s summer of wine continues in great fashion. You’ve got a rosé for evening sipping, an intensely fruity Sauvignon for salads and a big, bold Shiraz for your grilled meats on the barbie.

This case explores South Australia brilliantly, giving you a real range of style, grape and colours to try. You can choose and all red or all white case if you prefer, or even add an extra bottle too!.
