What is Grape Vodka? Is it really better for you?

Grape Vodka has been making a bit of a buzz recently, both over it's taste and perceived "healthier" affects when you drink it. But, is there any truth to this?

Firstly, we should start with what it actually is. Essentially, it's a vodka distilled from grapes rather than the traditional grain or potato vodka styles, allowing vodka, a usually neutral spirit, to take on subtle but important grape aromas and flavour. They tend to be smooth with a distinct sweetness.

So, is it better for you? In wine, particularly reds, there is a lot around the benefits of antioxidants in the tannin and wine's potential to increase resistance to heart problems as well as the fact that drinkers have a lower all-cause mortality rate. The reality is that most of the antioxidant properties from grapes are distilled out in the vodka making process, and there's little to no science proving they are present at all. That said, there are still studies showing a lower all-cause mortality rate for people who do drink, regardless of what it is, so there may be some benefit. Just drink within reason!
