What is Rosa Tequila?

Much like one of Port's recent modernisations, Tequila now has a pink variant too known as Rosa or Rose Tequila. There is no official guideline for its creation yet, but the majority is aged in red wine barrels imparting colour and flavour.

Reposado, Anejo and Extra Anejo Tequilas are cask-aged styles that have been around for centuries, but red wine casks is a happy new innovation in the process. The Real family of Amatitan, Jalisco claim to be the first when they were accidentally sent red wine barrels for ageing and used them anyway.

The resulting Tequila is known for being fresh, floral and with hints of red berries. Availability of these is still relatively small, thanks in part to the expense and lack of availability of acquiring the right red wine barrels for the Tequila, but as popularity grows we will surely begin to see more of these available.
