Tejo Wines

Tejo is located just inland from the Lisboa wine region, and is named after the Tejo river. At one point, Tejo had been a volume only region, with the fertile river banks and warm weather providing favourable growing conditions for high volume production. But following Portugal's accession to the EU, it has focussed far more on quality wine production, with new wineries springing up throughout the region. A range of international and local grapes are grown here, most common being Trincadeira, Castelão, Aragonez, Touriga Nacional, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon for red wines, and Fernão Pires, Arinto, Alvarinho, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay for white wines.

The whites here from Fernao Pires are wonderfully aromatic, whilst the reds come in a range of soft and juicy, or fuller, and structured styles, based on the Trincadeira and Castelao grape varieties.
