Niagara Peninsula Wines

Niagara Peninsula is the largest wine-producing region of Ontario, hosting over 80% of its vineyards. It has diverse topography and a range of microclimates, stretching from the shore of Lake Ontario to the limestone bluff above known as Niagara Escarpment, from which various river valleys flow.

Lake Ontario is one of the deepest Great Lakes, meaning it is able to provide a very steady moderating influence over both summer and winter, either prolonging the growing season or protecting the vines from harsh cold. Niagara Escarpment helps this effect by aiding the flow of air between it and the lake, and also protects the area from a cold south-westerly wind.

The two regional appellations here are Niagara Escarpment and Niagara-on-the-Lake, and there are also a number of small sub appellations. The Escarpment boundaries cover the benches and northern slopes, but importantly not the plateau. This is the coolest region in the area and produces excellent Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling and Cabernet Franc. Niagara-on-the-Lake covers flat lands on the shore and benefits from a warmer climate. The main grapes are actually the same, but they produce a riper, frutier style.
