What is Añejo Rum?

Añejo, meaning "aged" in Spanish, is a rum that has spent time in barrel allowing it to mature and mellow with age. The level of ageing varies from producer to producer, but can be anywhere from a few years to a few decades, with the price going up the longer the ageing.

The tropical climates where these rums are often matures contributes to something called an angel's share, which gracefully refers to the rum lost to evaporation in the barrel, and is part of the reason it costs more the longer it is aged because they are losing a good portion of the product!

Generally, Añejo Rums are complex, mellow and robust with sweet molasses, vanilla, tobacco and a whole range of spices. One of the most famous examples is the Havana Club 7 Year Old and a great, more affordable place to start your aged rum journey.
