Wine52 Case Review: California
This month’s Wine52 case explores the sunny coast of California, a region that I personally love when looking for something big and juicy. But, there is far more to Californian wine than just this. Cold coastal breezes and morning fog temper certain growing areas in the region, allowing for cool climate, aromatic grape varieties and wine styles to be made too. This case is a perfect example of just that, with an interesting Alsace-style Gewurztraminer and Albarino exemplifying the more refreshing qualities that California is capable of. The reds were pretty classic though, with a juicy Petit Verdot and plush Merlot to enjoy.
The Wine Tasting
Freestyle Gewurztraminer
Gewurztraminer is underrated in the wine world and one that many haven’t tried, not least because of the tricky pronunciation! It’s great to see Wine52 giving it the limelight. It is a uniquely aromatic variety, and unusually for white grapes, tends to make wines that are high in alcohol with low acidity.
I’d never tried the Californian version before as it really isn’t a grape you associate with the region, however, it was a good display indeed. The nose is full of rose petals and lychee with stone fruit coming up behind. The palate was medium bodied with low acidity yet managed to retain a refreshing elegance thanks to its delicate citrus and floral profile. Finally, a trademark spicy, peppery note capped off the finish.
Yogi Albarino
The next white moves us on to California’s take on a Spanish classic, renowned mostly for being very refreshing. America is actually the biggest importer of Galician Albarino, so it’s no surprise that an American producer is growing it themselves.
The nose was expressive and clean, rising high above the glass with strong nectarine and stone fruit aromas. To taste it was floral and filled with crisp citrus, but not quite as strong as the typical zippy Spanish style. I might be wrong and biased because its Californian, but I can't help feel but there's some oak in here too.
Popaeg Petit Verdot
Shining a light on this traditional Bordeaux variety that is often found in small proportions in many of the First Growth Chateau wines was a good move. Super juicy with the ripe red fruits that you expect in Cali wines. Underneath the fruit is a savoury streak that gives the wine a foodie edge and added complexity.
Tannin feels high but well-refined and smooth, whilst the finish is a pleasant length with a little oak spice.
Mythical Paradise Merlot
Merlot is a popular variety thanks to its approachable and soft character. When from California, this is taken up a notch as everything is that much riper and juicy!
You’re first hit with brilliant ripe fruits from wild strawberry to raspberry and blackcurrants on the nose. These carry over much the same to the palate giving you a nice fruity kick. But it really stands out for its oh so plush, pillowy and plummy nature, encased in a fruit bouquet: Great Merlot to a tee.
