The Long List

If you’d like to know a bit more about what you’re getting into, I’ve written up some tasting notes all in the name of good journalism.

  1. La Orphica Monastrell – With a high 4.4* from 22 ratings, and a 98% like ratio on Naked from over 800 people, this is I think a deserved winner. It isn’t just because the winemaker is called David, although that does of course help, but Monastrell is a gem of a grape that these lucky people have discovered. Monastrell, known as Mourvedre in France, is a fantastic standalone when made in Spain. The fruit for this one is partly raisined on the vine, concentrating flavour, tannin, acidity and sugar. It’s mellow and juicy with velvety dark red fruits and sweet spices.
  2. Benjamin Darnault Minervois – This has been a bestseller for many years at Naked now, with 98% likes from 1820 people on Naked’s website! But, based on our users, the 4.1* rating from 44 people puts it a touch below the Oprhica. Why is it so popular? It’s incredibly smooth, soft, fruity and juicy. It’s a true crowd pleaser and a reliable wine that you can turn to for every occasion. Not to mention the price is exceptional for what you get.
  3. Arabella Merlot – Another wine with a huge rating on Naked and a handsome 4.1* from our users. Arabella is a top quality brand name from South Africa made by the de Wet’s. The Merlot is filled with black cherry and has a decadent chocolatey feel. It finishes with a lovely bit of oak spice to bring roundness and texture.
  4. Arabella Shiraz – Despite scoring a mildly higher 4.2* than it’s Merlot partner, the Shiraz I’ve placed slightly lower as it has fewer ratings. That is not to discount it though! This wine hits the spot for those who prefer their big, beefy reds that manage to maintain a silky-smooth mouthfeel. And, as you might expect, a good bit of oak gives a nice spice kick on the finish.
  5. Christian Patat Primitivo – Christian Patat is a bit of a Naked Wines legend, known for making incredible Italian wines all over Italy. His Primitivo is dark, broody and intensely flavoured. Enjoy notes of dark cherry, black plums and a rounded finish. It’s pretty simple, but it’s delicious. 4.1* ought to tell you that!
  6. Benjamin Darnault Vignerons Wife Cremant de Bourgogne – Benjamin Darnault, best known for his still wines, knew that life wouldn’t be complete without fizz, and so he made his own Cremant from Burgundy. Consider this like an inbetween for Prosecco and Champagne. Much more flavoursome and refined than Prosecco, with approachable Champagne flavours. It’s easy drinking and great for toasting. No wonder it got a nice 4* rating.
  7. Benjamin Darnault La Repasse – Yet another Benjamin Darnault – is that telling you something? The Repasse is a unique Italian winemaking method whereby a mature vintage is passed over the crushed grape skins of a new harvest to imbue them with extra flavour. On this blend of Grenache, Syrah and Carignan, this works a treat. Decadent black fruits sucha s blackcurrant and blackberry meet earthiness, spice and even a little black tea note. It’s full bodied, but not overpowering due to finely balanced acidity. A great and unique wine!
  8. Galodoro Reserva 10 Barricas – A bit of exciting Portuguese winemaking here. Hermano sampled wines from over 300 of his best barrels, and then settled on his top 10 and blended them together. The result? A dark, ruby red wine that is superbly rich and palpably smooth. Packed with dark fruits, concentrated spice from ageing in American, French and Portuguese oak and oodles of complexity.
  9. Mauricio Lorca Angels Selection Malbec – You’ll probably never find a top 10 list without an Argentine Malbec, and this one comes in at a 96% approval rating on Naked, or 4* on WinesDirect. Described as one of the finest Malbec’s for the price tag, this was made specially to give back to the Angel’s who made Mauricio’s winemaking dreams come true. It’s literally overflowing with juicy, dark berries that give it a rich mouthfeel. This is also one that you can lay down for a few years, allowing some herbal complexity to develop.
  10. Rod Easthope Reserve Hawkes Bay Sauvignon Blanc – Whilst it pulls in at 5* on our website, it has fewer ratings than the others in this list so I’ve put it at number 10. Still, I think 5* is probably what I’d give it! Bursting with tropical fruits such as passionfruit and guava, followed up with lemongrass to temper things and elderflower to add elegance. It’s zippy and fresh, but will make you rethink Sauvignon. Not to mention, the price is exceptional for what you get.

There it is, the top 10 Naked Wines wines according to our website ratings. Each and every bottle here is a corker (literally in some cases) and are well worth your time.
