Sustainable Wines

Environmental impacts are fast becoming a key concern for consumer and producer alike as the effects of climate change have increased over the past few decades. These come in the forms of Biodynamic, organic, sustainable and natural wines. The extreme weather is both a curse and a blessing. High temperatures are benefitting ripening ability in places such as England, however, they are also causing massive strain on vines in warmer countries and changing the flavour profile of wines. For example, Rhone Syrah-based wines are beginning to lose their stylistic black pepper characteristics. The other extreme is frost, hail, flooding, wildfires and other equally disastrous events. These can and do wipe out entire crops, leaving producers with nothing to sell, driving up costs and damaging quality. As a result, environmentally conscious winemaking, vine growing and sustainable packaging are finding a huge surge in investment and beginning to influence consumers' decisions. English wines are also a great option as you can cut out shipping and distance transport impacts, reducing your carbon footprint.
