Vougeot Wines

Vougeot is dominated by its single Grand cru, the walled Clos de Vougeot, which is responsible for 75% of the vineyard area in the commune. The imposing chateau is the key feature of the region, and controls an estate of 50 hectares; it is also home to some of the most sumptuous and world famous dinners and events in Burgundy.

About Vougeot Wines

The commune runs from the hills right down to the flat levels close to the N74.

Unlike the neighbouring communes, as well as its reds, Vougeot produces whites, which account for approximately one third of total production.

With over 70 producers within this appellation, there is a wide variety of quality, with some of the very best and the very worst of Burgundy. Every producer is keen to cash in on the fame of the name, but some of the vineyards on the lower, alluvial slopes produce grapes and therefore wines, which lack concentration and depth. The key message here is to be check out the producers to ensure quality. At worst the wines are thin, dank and overpriced; at best they are dark, dense and sumptuously rich with a violet intensity, and good structure.
