Medoc

The Medoc area lies to the north west of Bordeaux and occupies an area of approximately 80 km in length, lodged between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gironde Estuary. It is the latter that has given the area its unique soil type, which is world famous; The Garonne and Dordogne rivers merge into the Gironde estuary, and carry with them heavy gravel deposits from their origins, which account for the gravel rich soils of the Haut Medoc – the perfect soils, for the growth of Cabernet Sauvignon, the king of grapes, in this sub-region – light reflective and with good drainage. The Medoc appellation covers all wines which are made within the Medoc designated area; however the highest quality wines, and some of the most famous red wines in the world, all come from the coveted Haut Medoc sub-region.
