The vineyards of northeast Italy have long been renowned for whites but in the Colli Orientali del Friuli around a third of the wines are red, and they too are worthy of attention. Aside from Cabernet, and the Merlot used here, local varieties such as Refosco add an original and distinctive twist to produce a refreshing, food friendly style.
