Here's a rewarding rarity from respected blenders and bottlers Hunter Laing. The firm works closely with selected distilleries and cooperages, buying and ageing stand-out casks to make their own range of blended whiskies. Under the supervision of master blender Tom Aitken, the tasting panel regularly samples the malts to assess their quality as they age. Here they set aside extra-special barrels to be bottled unblended as part of their Old Malt Cask series, and this glorious 20 year old is one of their best. It's from the Macduff distillery in Banff, which makes Glen Deveron single malt, and also provides the main component for William Lawson whisky. It's cask strength, so add a splash of water to release the apple and vanilla character.
