Lowland malts are produced by the region's traditional triple distillation method, which results in a fresh, lighter style of whisky compared to the smoky or peaty intensity found elsewhere. Lightness of touch may be the classic Lowland style, but that does not imply any lack of character. Auchentoshan is all about complexity and subtlety. From its deep golden barley appearance rise notes of fresh tobacco leaf and caramelised oak, and a suggestion of green tea and toasted almonds. Tasting it, you are immediately struck by its floral freshness and orangey citrus zest. It has a lingering aromatic presence. Founded around 1800, just outside Glasgow, Auchentoshan is one of the few Lowland distilleries still in production. A malt to savour.
