South Australia's warm, dry Barossa Valley region, is renowned for its rich, powerful red wines, often made from the fruit of exceptionally old vines. Here renowned winemaker David Powell has worked with 80-year-old vineyards to produce a blend of Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvedre that is typical of France's Rhone Valley, but here has typically Australian ripeness and concentration. The wine was aged in French oak for 18 months.
Serve at room temperature. This is an extremely food-friendly wine which makes a great partner for lamb, beef and duck, especially peppery dishes. Try it with fine cheeses too.
