Henley Royal Regatta 2013 - Exclusive Discount To Wines Direct Members
Finals Day - Sunday 7th July Champagne, Strawberries, Lobster.... and Rowing
One of the quintessential summer season events, on a par with Ascot or Wimbledon, where ladies dress to impress while sipping Pimms on the riverbank.
First held in 1839, Henley gained royal patronage in 1851 when Prince Albert came on board. Since then the protocol is that every reigning monarch becomes the Royal Patron allowing the word ‘Royal’ to be attached to the title.
The course is a straight 1 mile 550 yards, taking approx 7 minutes to cover. There are 6500 members who are allowed entry to the Stewards Enclosure. One of the strange rules in place is that gentlemen are only allowed to remove their jackets if the Head Steward does, which can be a bit tough if it hits 80 degrees and he still wants to look cool in his stripy jacket!
This year we have teamed up with local boat company, the Maidenhead Steam Navigation Company, to offer site visitors the opportunity to join in the Bird Place Henley Regatta Garden Party on either the Opening Day (more races!) of Wednesday 3rd July or Finals Day (less traffic!) on Sunday 7th July. Now in its 6th year this takes place amidst the beautiful private gardens of a 4 acre riverside site in the grounds of a Tudor mansion adjacent to Regatta HQ. Their two luxurious boats are moored at the bottom of the garden waiting to take you out on two cruises during the day to take in the colour, excitement, eccentricities and the rowing at first hand.
There is a complimentary shuttle bus from Henley rail station or tickets at just £15 per car can be purchased for parking at Bird Place itself. From 10.30 a.m. onwards you are met with Coffee, Danish & Pastries followed by a Champagne, Pimms & Bucks Fizz Reception at 11 a.m. The 90 minute morning cruise with complimentary bar is optional but most guests are keen to hit the river. On your return a 4-course fine dining luncheon with French wines and liqueurs is served which includes their signature lobster option. Private tables of 6, 8, 10 or 12 may be booked.
The Trad Jazz band plays throughout outside the smart pagoda-style marquee complex amongst the trees. After lunch everyone piles onto the two riverboats for another outing up and down the course. Drinks are complimentary throughout the day. On your return a classic English Strawberry Cream Tea is made available. You will have gathered by now that high end food and drink is very much part of the day! The event draws to a close around 6 p.m. when the band plays their final number.
Tickets for the event should be £226.80 per person but if you quote that you are a Wines Direct members you pay just £198 per person for this exclusive event.
