About Pomerol Wines

This has to be the most exclusive patch of land in the wine world! A small and prestige region on the Right Bank, it covers less than 2000 acres of vineyards, and lies outside any form of classification such as the Medoc or Saint-Emilion ones, yet many of its wines have reached stellar status, and command higher prices than the top Medoc wines – chateau Petrus and Chateau Le Pin are such examples.

The best vineyards in Pomerol are in the eastern section of the small area, where they meet Saint-Emilion; Merlot dominates on the rich, clay soils, and produces rich, full, but earlier developing wines, which is one of the reasons for Pomerol’s prestigious and popular status – they are more generous at an early age than Medoc wines. The aromatic Cabernet Franc also performs well in this area. The only danger with a heavy reliance on Merlot is that it is subject to spring frosts, as it buds early, and there have been some years , where a high proportion of the vines have lost all their crop.

There is a great deal of investment in Pomerol currently, from the Far East and many multinationals, with money pouring into the vineyards, the chateaux and the winemaking.

Guigal was established shortly after the Second World War by Étienne Guigal who started with another famous Rhone name, Vidal Fleury.
